[Update] Player Ostend Mebude’s situation is critical but stable after a serious car accident

Dapo Mebude, a 22-year-old footballer from KV Oostende in Belgium, is in a life-threatening condition after suffering a serious traffic accident in Loppem.

The West Flanders prosecutor’s office, Bruges department, has confirmed this. On Sunday morning at around 9am, the Scottish man was involved in a car accident in which his vehicle hit a tree at the E40 exit. Emergency services immediately arrived at the scene to put the footballer out of his misery. Mebude was transported to hospital in critical condition. The Bruges prosecutor’s office is investigating the exact cause of the crash and has not released any details. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Mebude trained at Rangers and played for several Scottish youth teams. Since 2022, the striker plays for KV Oostende, which canceled plans for a training match with FC Knokke. “Our thoughts are with Dapo and his family,” the club said.

Update: Mebude is in stable condition

The day after the accident, Mebude’s situation was critical but stable. His parents are now in Belgium. “The investigation into this incident is still ongoing,” said the Public Prosecutor. On Sunday he underwent emergency surgery at AZ Sint-Jan in Bruges. The Public Prosecutor confirmed that Mebude’s condition was ‘critical but stable’ following emergency surgery.

The cause of the accident is still unclear. “An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently being conducted by traffic experts appointed by the prosecutor’s office.”

Waiting in fear

Meanwhile, KV Oostende waited in fear. The club is contacting Mebude’s parents, who have now arrived from England. “Today (Monday) the players have a day off,” said Bram Keirsebilck, spokesman for KV Oostende to Het Nieuwsblad. “We usually train again on Tuesday to prepare for the next game. We hope we get good news about Dapo soon.’
