“Extremely extreme fire danger” was forecast in parts of Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece on Monday, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

“Extremely Extreme Hazard” is the highest level of risk on the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF)/Fire Weather Index (FWI) scale.

Lower fire rates – “extreme danger” – are expected in other parts of Europe, including the UK, France, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Romania and Croatia.

EFFIS is one of the modules of Copernicus Emergency Management Services, which provides daily fire hazard forecasts based on the Fire Weather Index (FWI).

There is also a forest fire hazard warning across Slovenia, with the danger level being “extreme” in the southwest of the country, according to METEOALARM, the integration of Europe’s national weather service and part of the European Weather Services Network.

In Greece, hundreds of firefighters are trying to contain wildfires across the country. 320 firefighters in 68 trucks and two firefighting planes battled for a fifth day of battling a fire in Dadia National Park, near the Evros border region, in the northeast of the country, where the only black vulture colony in the Balkans was found.
