The US and UK impose sanctions on Chinese companies over cyberattacks

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and Britain have imposed sanctions on Chinese companies blamed for cyberattacks in both countries. The company is said to be a cover for hackers working on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security. Action has also been taken against two Chinese nationals.

The hackers are said to have attacked the company, according to the US Treasury Department. In the UK, an attempt was made to break into the email accounts of MPs critical of China. Britain also said that Chinese hackers were behind a cyber attack that obtained the data of tens of millions of British voters. This hack was announced by the British government in 2022, but until now it is not clear who was behind it.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the UK denied the allegations. “China’s cyberattacks against the UK are fabricated and malicious. We strongly oppose these accusations,” the spokesperson said. British Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has now summoned the Chinese ambassador.
