The US and UK impose sanctions on Chinese companies over cyberattacks

The hackers are said to have attacked the company, according to the US Treasury Department. In the UK, an attempt was made to break into the email accounts of MPs critical of China. Britain also said that Chinese hackers were behind a cyber attack that obtained the data of tens of millions of British voters. The hack was announced by the British government in 2023, but until now it is not clear who was behind it.

Cybercriminals had access to email servers and copies of voter registers containing data on around 40 million British voters for more than a year, British media reported. However, British Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden said that “attempts to undermine British democracy have been unsuccessful.”

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the UK denied the allegations. “China’s cyberattacks against the UK are fabricated and malicious. We strongly oppose these accusations,” the spokesperson said. Dowden has now summoned the Chinese ambassador.
