Although Labor won seats – usually always Conservatives – in the north of England, narrow defeats at Uxbridge and South Ruislip have given Prime Minister Rishi Sunak some breathing room ahead of national elections expected next year.

“If anyone needs to be told we’re not there yet, they should look to Uxbridge,” Starmer said at a party meeting. “The result in Uxbridge shows there is no time to slow down.”

Starmer also argued that the reason for his defeat lay not in the candidate but in Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s plans to expand London’s low emission zone. It should happen next month.

With that, the Conservatives would win seats on Labor policy, Starmer said. “In elections, policy is important,” he said today. “We made a big mistake when the policies we created ended up on Tory pamphlets. We must swallow it now, and learn from it.’
