Foreign media report ‘inhuman’ asylum crisis

The issue of accepting refugees in Ter Apel has received a lot of international attention. The death of a three-month-old baby in a sports hall near the app center was reported by media in countries such as Germany, Belgium, Spain, the UK and the United States.

German newspapers explain to readers that the Netherlands is facing a crisis in accepting asylum seekers. The baby’s death has been described as a dramatic turn of events that has further increased pressure on the government in The Hague.

Problems are also being addressed in neighboring Belgium. Omroep VRT wrote that the situation in Ter Apel was getting worse day by day. “And the locals are getting bored too.” Apart from local residents, broadcasters also let asylum seekers speak out. A man says he has been waiting for twenty days. People also indicated that they were sick or walked around with sores.

It is not only the European media that is reporting on the situation in Ter Apel. The Washington Post also covered infant deaths in “temporary shelters”. The American newspaper also wrote that aid organizations described the conditions under which refugees live in the Netherlands as ‘inhumane’.
