The new Nissan X-Trail is not from England

The new generation Nissan X-Trail is not made in England, but in Japan. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Brexit is why Nissan is building the new X-Trail elsewhere.

Sunderland

Nissan announced four months after the Brexit referendum – in June 2016 – that it would build the new X-Trail at its Sunderland factory. However, Nissan has now withdrawn this. Production of the new X-Trail will be moved to Kyushu, Japan. Nissan gave reasons why the company could optimize investment in this way. But Brexit also plays an important role. “The continued uncertainty surrounding the future relationship between the UK and the EU does not help companies like ours plan for the future,” said Gianluca de Ficchy, Senior Vice President and Chairman of Nissan.

Juke and Qashqai

The new generation Juke and Qashqai are still being built in Sunderland. It is not yet known what consequences the X-Trail’s ‘departure’ from the UK will have on jobs in Sunderland.
