Cosmetics chain The Body Shop has closed its books in its home country, the UK. This can be seen from the press release published on Tuesday. More than 2,000 jobs are at risk.
Consulting firm FRP has been appointed to handle the insolvency and restructuring of its UK operations. The goal is to “breathe new life into this iconic brand,” according to the press release. Therefore, this procedure only concerns UK activities, and not other global networks.
At the end of last year, Brazil’s Natura Cosmeticos sold the company to German investment fund Aurelius for 243 million euros. Brazilians still paid 1 billion in 2017. They bought the chain from French cosmetics giant L’Oréal at the time.
The Body Shop was founded in England in 1976 and is now active in 89 countries. Founder Antia Roddick, an animal rights activist, started with a small shop in Brighton. The chain has become popular because it sells cosmetics and other products that are not tested on animals.
The chain has 200 stores in the UK. The news is a further blow to UK retail.
In our country there are shops, among others, in Antwerp (Leysstraat), Wijnegem (Shop Eat Enjoy) and Sint-Niklaas (Waasland Shopping).
