Popular ‘Mister Speaker’ says goodbye: what will John Bercow do?

No more ‘orderrr, orderrr’. John Bercow’s leadership of the British Parliament has ended. He is not interested in any other work in politics at the moment. “I don’t have any intention of becoming a minister.”

Bercow was 46 years old when he became Lord Speaker. The 157th in British history. In the past, the speaker of parliament then also became prime minister. In 1801 it was Henry Addington and in 1806 William Grenville. But Bercow didn’t want to think about it. He’s going to do something very different. “I wish I had the experience so I could do speaking, writing and commercial work.”

Volunteer work

Such work should make money. Because Bercow also wants to do volunteer work. “I want to work for social mobility, so that capable people from disadvantaged backgrounds have the opportunity to advance in work, achieve their goals and thereby rise socially.”

Bercow – married and father of three – also has dreams. He likes sports, such as tennis and football. He also hopes to get a position there. ”I’m a big sports fanatic. Especially tennis and football. So there is a possibility that I will do something in sports or higher education.”

Bercow doesn’t like doing the same thing for another ten years. He wants to be some kind of expert in everything. “I don’t have any definite plans yet, but I’m probably going to do a few different things that I want to enjoy as much as possible.”

Bercow’s replacement will be announced on Monday. In parliament, 650 members chose their new speaker from nine candidates.
