The new British Prime Minister to replace outgoing Boris Johnson will be announced on September 5, the ruling Conservative Party reports. “We need quite a bit of time before we can announce the results,” Graham Brady, chairman of the committee that determines the voting procedure, said of the date chosen.

So far, 11 candidates have applied to take over from Johnson as party leader and prime minister. Under rules agreed by appointed party officials, the field will be reduced to two candidates “in an expedited process,” Brady said. Party members are then given the opportunity to vote for one of the two remaining candidates by mail.

Lawmakers are examining the “accelerated process” Brady cited. In three rounds of elimination they can always cast the vote of their choice. After the finals on July 21, there are only two candidates left. July 21 is also the date the House of Commons summer recess begins. The two remaining candidates are then free to campaign among party members.

Some 200,000 Conservative Party members then elect their new party leader by mail. Since the Conservatives have a parliamentary majority, they will be the next Prime Minister of the UK.
