Britain confirms it will send long-range missiles to Ukraine

UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace confirmed Thursday in Parliament that his government will deliver the long-range “Storm Shadows” missile to the Ukrainian Army.

“Today I can confirm that the UK will donate a ‘Storm Shadow’ missile to Ukraine. The ‘Storm Shadow’ is a long range, conventional and precision missile,” Wallace explained before the House of Commons (low).

The possibility of delivery, which has now been ratified, has been received with threats from Russia, which is interpreting Ukraine’s new capability as an escalation to which it will respond proportionately.

In his statement, Wallace argued that “the contribution of this weapons system provides Ukraine with the best chance of defending itself against Russia’s continued brutality, especially its deliberate attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which contravenes international law.”

“Ukraine has the right to be able to defend itself against this,” the minister stressed. Moreover, he insisted that these missiles “will enable Ukraine to repel Russian troops based in the sovereign territory of Ukraine.”

The politician also noted that he does not plan to elaborate on the missile’s capabilities but noted that this system is not even in the same league as Russia’s AS-24 hypersonic killer missile. Kalibr cruise missile which has a range of 2,000 kilometers, about seven times that of Storm Shadow.

“Russia must recognize that its actions have resulted in the provision of these systems to Ukraine,” the British minister said. It concluded that this was “an adapted and proportionate response to the Russian escalation.”

Response from Russia

Russia has received news of Britain’s supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine in an “extremely negative” manner and will respond “appropriately” to the move, the Kremlin reported today.

“This requires an adequate response also from our military, which will make relevant decisions from a military point of view,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Pesko said in a telephone press conference.
