Warning in UK and Ireland: tourist returns from Spain with cryptoporidiosis

Cryptoporidiosis is called a complaint made to God after losing everything invested in bitcoin, but the reality is a intestinal parasites where the British and Irish return to their countries after visiting Spain. According to the scientific magazine ‘Eurosurveillance’, “a continuous and unusual excess in illness” between August 14 and October 1. These cases relate to “international travel, especially to Spain and other Mediterranean countries.”

Cryptoporidiosis is an infection caused by the Cryptosporidium parasite which lives in soil, food and water. The Irish Mirror newspaper claims that the bacteria were contracted in water parks or swimming pools. Parasites, as you can see, can appear anywhere, except Health and Safety Executive (HSE) “specifically” blames Salou, in Catalonia.

In affected locations, the HSE recommends not consuming iced drinks, checking tap water for treatment (sniffing chlorine bleach), brush your teeth with bottled water and be careful if the pool or sea water looks unclean. However, the country’s public health is trying to reassure tourists: “The following drinks are generally safe: […] beer and wine.”

Typically, this parasite causes mild gastrointestinal symptoms more serious cases in babies due to dehydration and because it is a risk disease for those who are immunosuppressed. Some people may also experience dehydration, weight loss, stomach cramps, fever, nausea and vomiting, according to the HSE. Symptoms can last 1 to 2 weeks.

So far this year, Spain has recorded 2,940 cases of cryptoporidiosis (compared to 805 cases recorded in 2022), of which 121 have been hospitalized. On the other hand, England has diagnosed it 2,411 cases between August 14 and September 1. From them, 46% have traveled to Spain.

However, It has not been confirmed that the cryptoporidiosis that affected British and Irish tourists was Spanish. Even though I’m in Salou and the amnesty is being signed. “People travel more and swim in pools more in the summer, so it makes sense that more outbreaks will occur when and where this occurs. Without a complete and detailed study of the health situation and genotype, before and after travel, it cannot be known whether the origins of the outbreak were in Spain. or if the parasite travels with tourists from their country of origin“, show me Country Isabel de Fuentes, parasitology researcher at the National Microbiology Center of the Carlos III Institute of Health.
