Ukraine. European Commission: Ukraine ready for next step towards EU membership

Ukrainian troops attacked a shipyard in the Russian-occupied port city of Kerch in Crimea on Saturday evening. That’s what the Ukrainian army said. According to the Ministry of Strategic Communications of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the attack was “successful.” These claims cannot be independently verified.

For a long time, Crimea was out of reach of the Ukrainian army, but thanks to supplies of long-range missile weapons from the West, it has recently been able to regularly fire at targets on the peninsula.

However, today’s rocket attack will be the furthest, as Kerch is more than 250 kilometers from the front line. Kiev could also benefit from successful efforts in recent weeks to eliminate Russian air defenses in Crimea.

It is not known whether there was any damage on Saturday or there were any casualties. Russian occupation forces in Crimea said the rockets were fired from the sky. mImages on social media showed rocket attacks followed by fires near the shipyard. A Russian ship launching cruise missiles towards Ukraine may have been hit.

Via Telegram, the commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, General Mykola Oleshchuk, thanked “the pilots for the successful attack on the infrastructure of the Zaliv shipyard in Kerch.” According to Oleshchuk, Russia has “suffered the Scalp”, referring to the French long-range Scalp EC missile with a range of 550 kilometers that Ukraine has been using for several months.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly said he is determined to reclaim the territory. The city of Kerch is located near the bridge connecting the peninsula with the Russian mainland and is given the same name. The bridge was hit twice with explosives, first by a truck, then by an unmanned boat, but was repaired each time by the Russians.
