Then At 1: Have You Ever Mellow?

The Party Animals first appeared in the I Wanna Be A Hippy Technohead clip. The UK project spent three weeks at the top of the Top 40 for three weeks in the summer of 1995.

Flamman & Abraxis, which produced the remix, saw something in the foursome Evert van Buschbach, Dennis Adam, Paul Grommé and David Adam that can be seen in the Technohead clip. Jeroen and Jeff decide to start Party Animals with them. Technohead’s success was rocked in 1995 by the death of Lee Newman, who had worked with Michael Wells on several projects since 1985, including Technohead.

In January 1996 Party Animals released their first single with Have You Ever Been Mellow?. The song was written in 1974 by John Farrar for Olivia Newton-John. The Australian just scored his first number 1 hit in the United States with Honestly Love You and with Have You Never Been Mellow released a successor that, despite only a week, made it to the number one spot in America. The single was also modest success in New Zealand, but barely managed to stand out in Europe. It wasn’t until 1978 that Newton-John broke through in our country with a series of hits from the film Grease.

In the versions made by Flamman and Abraxis, very few Newton-John songs remain. The snippet of the chorus is used and ‘never’ becomes ‘never’ in the Dutch version. Vocals for Have You Ever Mellow? sung by Suzanna Mangar who can previously be heard as backing singer on two Top 40 hits by Loïs Lane.

Have You Ever Mellow? remains a UK single Party Animals hit. Second, it made it to 43rd position on the other side of the North Sea.

After Have You Ever Mellow? two more number 1 hits followed in our country with Hava Naquila and Aquarius, with which Party Animals managed to achieve an unparalleled performance as a Dutch act by debuting in the Top 40 with three consecutive number 1 hits.

The hits from Party Animals came together on the debut album Good Vibrations, which reached the top 3 of the Dutch album list and received gold status.
