Carola Schouten, deputy prime minister of the Christian Union (CU) in the Dutch government, will not be on the list again in November. Hague politicians are once again looking at the possibility of leaving.

“There is a new generation ready and I know that Christian Union is in good and trustworthy hands,” the party quoted Carola Schouten as saying in a press release. After 12 years in politics, this 45 year old man wants to take his life in a different direction. There is no further explanation at this time. This is the second major defeat for the party in 2023. Its chairman Gert-Jan Segers resigned in January.

Schouten served under the fourth Rutte government as Minister of Poverty, Participation and Pensions Policy. The Netherlands met him in 2011 when he entered the House of Representatives.

That Volkskrant spoke of a ‘Hague exodus’ with new departures. Last week, many prominent Dutch politicians chose to leave: Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD), Finance Minister Sigrid Kaag (D66) and Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra (CDA) left politics after the elections. Many other ministers in the latter party also announced that they were no longer interested in a place on the list. On November 22, 2023, our neighbors to the north will again go to the polls.
