Britain must put an end to Rwanda’s plans

The High Court in the UK today said that the British government’s policy towards Rwanda was unlawful.

Amnesty International UK’s Sacha Deshmukh reacted to the news:

‘This decision is vital to protect people seeking asylum in this country, but the government must now draw the line at this shameful chapter in Britain’s political history.’

“The deal with Rwanda – a country with a history of serious human rights violations, such as arbitrary detention, torture and repression of freedom of expression – is unwelcome and cruel.”

The new government and interior minister must now abandon the idea of a deal with Rwanda, and also scrap the underlying policy of refusing to process people’s asylum applications. This also applies to the ‘Illegal Migration Act’, which has embraced this abhorrent policy.

‘These policies have left the UK’s asylum system in shambles and this shameful deal only makes matters worse.’

‘The only responsible, effective and appropriate response to this decision is to seriously undertake a fair and efficient assessment of asylum applications.’

The idea that the UK would withdraw from the European Agreement to implement this failed policy is absurd and not an option. The government must make policies that are in accordance with the law, and not make the law conform to its policies.’
