CelebrityBritish singer Dua Lipa (27) with Albanian roots has been hurt by recent statements by the British Home Secretary, Suella Braverman. He spoke, among other things, of the ‘Albanian outlaws’ crossing the Channel. “Short-sighted and narrow-minded”, said the singer, calling for more empathy for migrants.
Dua Lipa was born in 1995 in Great Britain, but her parents were Albanians who fled Kosovo in the 1990s. Since 2022, Dua Lipa is Albanian by nationality. Recent statements by the British Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, misguided him. The politician called the refugees crossing the Strait “Albanian criminals” and compared the influx to an “invasion”.
Hard working people
The British singer finds the way politicians often talk about migrants hurtful. “Of course it hurts,” Lipa said in an interview with The Sunday Times. “I’ve always felt that London is a melting pot of cultures. It is an integral part of the city. So when you hear the government talk about Albanians, for example, it hurts. It was short-sighted and narrow-minded, but that was how many people thought.
Lipa thinks the cliché of “immigrants coming into the country and taking jobs” will always be around, even if it’s not like that. “They come to London and make a living by working very hard.” Braverman’s previous comments were also called “very, very shameful” by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
