The first day of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest could be a very successful day for the Netherlands. Sifan Hassan will fight for gold in the 10,000 meters on Saturday and the Dutch formation – with Femke Bol – has a good chance in the mixed 4×400 meters.
Just like at the Olympics in Tokyo Sifan Hassan This World Championship is for three medals. He has his best chance of winning gold on Saturday night in the 10,000 meters, a distance at which he was already world champion in 2019 and is the reigning Olympic champion. Hassan’s schedule is so busy that he first ran the 1,500 meters on Saturday morning.
The United States is the favorite in the mixed 4×400 meter event, but the Dutch formation also dreams of the world title. The series is scheduled in the morning and the finale in the evening. Last year in Eugene, the Dutch conquered – with Femke Bol, Dear Klaver, Liemarvin Bonevacia and the now absent Tony van Diepen – silver at the World Championships in Eugene.
For Anouk Vetter, Emma Oosterwegel And Doctor Sofi the first four sections of the heptathlon await. Eyes were largely on Vetter, who won silver medals at the 2021 Olympics and 2022 World Championships. Gold then went to Nafissatou Thiam, but the Belgian missed Budapest due to injury.
There are many more Dutch athletes in action on Saturday. For hammer throwers Denzel comments and long jump Pauline Hondema wait for temporary qualifications Raphael Bouju the only Dutchman in the 100 meter series.
And then there was great Dutch talent starting in the 1,500 meters. Niels Laros only eighteen years old, but in June he already equaled the 22-year-old Dutch record (3.32.89).
