Updating our approach to content related to eating disorders

For example, we may age-restrict videos that detail a creator’s eating disorder while discussing their recovery process.

We developed our approach to adding age restrictions to videos related to eating disorders after consulting with outside experts. The goal is to strike the right balance in our ongoing efforts to protect younger users from content they are more likely to copy than adult audiences. Like all of our Community Guidelines updates, these age restrictions can take time to fully take effect, so you may not see them right away.

Added a crisis reference panel for eating disorders below the video

Crisis resource panels are currently available on YouTube at the top of search results for eating disorders in Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, US and UK . Crisis resource panels provide information and resources from mental health organizations around the world, such as NEDA in the US or Vandrevala Foundation in India.

In addition to the new policies and age restrictions, we’ll be expanding the crisis reference panel to also appear on watch pages in these countries. Featuring this panel beneath videos related to eating disorders will allow us to reach a wider audience with important mental health references and context. Like the policies mentioned above, implementing dashboards takes time.

The Panel will be available in the official languages of all these countries and we will work to roll it out in more languages and countries in the future.
