Today: George Michael settles down

Top 40 has been the leading hits list in the Netherlands since 1965. In the Today section we look back at events in pop music that happened exactly X years ago. In Today’s episode: George Michael’s spat with record company Sony.

In 1992, George Michael decided to take Sony to court. The singer felt that he had too little control over the musical works he performed. Michael felt like he was nothing more than a commodity and society’s toy.

The singer received a payment of 1 million British pounds in early 1992 for his agreement with Sony. He repaid the amount six months later while he was busy with legal preparations for the complaint he filed on October 30, 1992. In the end, George Michael was unable to win the lawsuit when the court ruled on June 1, 1994 and found that the terms of the agreement were genuine. and makes sense. On July 14, 1995 George Michael announced that he had reached an agreement with Sony, ending the collaboration.

The singer regretted that the case had dragged on and that his success in the United States had therefore failed. It all happened during a period where he was also going through a difficult time personally. His colleague, Anselmo Feleppa, was diagnosed with HIV and later died of a brain hemorrhage.

On July 14, 1982 Pink Floyd’s film The Wall premieres in London.

The Wall is based on the group’s concept album and tour of the same name. The film consists mostly of Pink Floyd music and very little talking. The lead role was played by Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats. She plays young rock star Pink, who ends up isolated due to negative experiences.

The wall also features the famous marching hammer animation, which was previously used during The Wall Tour in 1980 and 1981. The script, like the album itself, was written by Roger Waters, who also makes a cameo in the film as a wedding guest. The premiere will be attended by Bob Geldof, Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason, among others. Keyboardist Richard Wright was absent. He left the group during the recording of the album The Wall due to bad relations with the rest of the group.

Dutch people had to wait some time before the film could be seen. It only premiered in our country three weeks later, on August 6, 1982. In 1983, The Wall won two awards at the BAFTAs. This is the most important British film award. The Wall won prizes for best voice and best original song. In the final category, Another Brick In The Wall won, including Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger from Rocky III.
