MADRID, July 7 (EDITION) –
This endangered lion undergo a deep and thorough ear cleaning after suffering from chronic ear pain. Specialists from across the UK flocked to London Zoo as part of a long-term health plan, and the team got to work cleaning his ears.
Bhanu, a 13 year old Asian lion weighing 174kg, had a very bad ear infection, eardrops couldn’t cure him. The scan reveals just that the problem was that Bhanu had unusually narrow ear canals.
A medical plan is then drawn up and the lion is prescribed anti-inflammatory and antifungal medication, as well as an annual medical exam and ear cleaning. Experts from the ZSL veterinary team, Royal Veterinary College and STORZ veterinary equipment specialists gathered to carry out the procedure.
Stefan Saverimuttu, a London Zoo veterinarian, said: “Bhanu’s comfort and well-being is our top priority, and they inform all of our decisions.”
“We filled his snug nest with soft hay to prepare for the procedure and, thanks to the specialist training of London Zoo’s caretakers and caretakers, Bhanu chose to calmly show his claws so we can administer general anesthesia.”
The team got a clear picture of the inside of Bhanu’s ear. after inserting a pipe cleaner sized camera, provided by STORZ, into his ear canal.
This allows them to thoroughly clean the ear and deliver medication to the appropriate area. “This annual review helps us provide the best care for Bhanu’s ears., but it also means we can monitor your general health at the same time, check if his eyes, teeth and heart are in perfect condition,” added Stefan.
Bhanu is an important member of Europe’s endangered Asian lion breeding programmedesigned to protect healthy and genetically diverse populations in conservation zoos across Europe.
Shortly after awakening from anesthesia, Bhanu claims his crown as zoo king, prowling his enclosure in the Land of the Lions, accompanied by the lioness Arya.
