Sunak sworn in as UK Prime Minister: ‘I want to unite the country, not with words but with action’

Rishi Sunak was sworn in as Britain’s new Prime Minister on Tuesday. In the Prime Minister’s next speech, Sunak stated that he wanted to unite the country and shore up the economy. “I want to unite our country, not with words but with actions. I will work day in and day out to deliver it for you,” Sunak said. “Our government stands for integrity.”

Sunak continued his speech with the challenges facing the UK. “Our country is facing a severe economic crisis.” He also mentioned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and “unstable energy markets.” “I was elected as party leader and prime minister to face this challenge. The work starts today,” said Sunak, who among other things promised “economic stability.”

The Conservative Party leader also promised “better schools, safer roads and controlled borders.” “I know we are in a difficult situation and have to make a lot of efforts to restore confidence. But I am ready to lead our country.”

He was installed earlier in the day by King Charles III. With Sunak, Britain for the first time has a Prime Minister with an Indian background. He was officially appointed as the new leader and successor to party colleague Liz Truss on Tuesday. He lasted only 44 days, partly because of heavily criticized financial proposals.

Sunak said “mistakes have been made” under Truss, without elaborating. He did say he would correct the mistake, although according to Sunak, Truss was right to seek economic growth.

Sunak, 42, who previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Boris Johnson, previously said the country was in a deep economic crisis and that “stability and unity” were the most important priorities. The British government faced a budget deficit of £40 billion and the country experienced high inflation.

On Monday it emerged that he is the new leader of the Conservative Party – and therefore automatically the new British Prime Minister. More than 200 of the 357 members of the House of Commons chose Sunak as party leader, at the expense of his rival Penny Mordaunt. For a while it looked like Johnson would also be involved in Truss’ succession, but on Sunday he announced he would not stand as a candidate.
