Roy Barreras, from Senate to ambassador to Great Britain

Outgoing Senate President Roy Barreras gave his final press conference, where he made a few announcements about what he would do after leaving Congress, but did not disclose the news. who later learned that he was to become Colombian ambassador to Great Britain in London.

Minutes after he told the media that he would devote himself to looking after his health and that he had no aspirations for the October elections, it became known from the Casa de Nariño that Senator Barreras was offered the diplomatic representation.

This is in recognition of his work which he carried out with the government of President Petro, in addition to the role he played in last year’s presidential election.

When asked about the offer, Roy Barreras replied somewhat evasively, “I am very grateful to the President, whom I have not spoken to, for the offer he made me aware of. I have been saying for weeks that my life in Congress is over.”

“This Thursday the decision of the State Council was passed, starting Friday they can elect a new Senate president and I also said that my calling is to serve this country, to I am passionate about Colombia from where it is useful, so thanks and I hope to know the details in the next few hours as I haven’t spoken to the president yet”, Barreras.

And then with an insistence that it be accurate, he notes: «I have said that I am ready to serve the country where I am useful and I hope to be there where the president has decided”.

At his first press conference Roy Barreras has indicated that “the day after tomorrow the decision stands firmtherefore on Friday in plenary or when they determine, they may elect who leads the corporation for the remainder of the session until July 20”.

Facing the candidacy for mayor, he indicated that “I thank so many men and women of Bogotá and the leaders, and citizens, who came up with the idea that I could be mayor of Bogotá, thank you, but I don’t improvise, I have prepared my whole life to build the nation”, Roy Barreras.

Regarding the possibility of him becoming part of President Gustavo Petro’s cabinet, where he even once dreamed of becoming Minister of Culture, Barreras dismissed that possibility. “Nor will I be part of the presidential cabinet, other than that it is part of the jurisdiction, I will dedicate myself, as everyone knows, to recover my health and I will return from another position to help the country“, he has stated.

Roy Barreras indicated that for the time being he had no aspirations of becoming a presidential candidate, and considered that anyone who had voiced aspirations for the position with the remaining three years of Gustavo Petro’s Administration, was a mistake. “Every initial presidential run and erotic relationship they don’t work well when there are early results,” he said.

Faced with yet another legislative agenda, the outgoing Senate president convinced that an additional session must be held after June 20, in order to be able to vote on pension, health, and labor reform, and in regular session monthss took electoral reform, legislative action, among others.
