In the state of Texas, seven other women who were denied medically necessary abortions joined a lawsuit filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights against the state of Texas. The case now has 22 plaintiffs and will go to the Texas Supreme Court later this month. The goal is to determine which cases constitute a “medical emergency” that justifies abortion and allows medical personnel to make decisions without fear of legal proceedings. One of the new plaintiffs is Danielle Mathisen, an obstetrician and gynecologist who was forced to leave her home state to receive abortion services. Mathisen said, “Texas legislators know nothing about medicine and have created a major public health crisis.”

In related news, a federal judge blocked an Idaho state law that made it a crime to help a minor travel to another state for an abortion without parental consent. The judge asserted that the law, signed into law in April by the state’s governor, Republican Brad Little, violates the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Meanwhile, the United States Department of Justice is supporting two lawsuits seeking to challenge similar laws in the state of Alabama.
