January, the month dedicated to walking dogs and their owners to promote healthy living

Going for walks or walks with pets is a healthy exercise for both animals and people. It’s not just about doing physical activity, it’s also a mental stimulus for both the dog and the owner. For this reason, during January the month of walking (Walk Your Dog Month) is celebrated in the United States, a custom that has also begun to spread to other countries such as the UK.

Walking helps maintain muscle tone and joint movement of pets. If the animal is overweight or obese, this exercise can be a great way to lose weight.

In 2017, a survey conducted by the Association for the Prevention of Obesity in Pets showed that 56% of dogs in the United States suffer from obesity problems, that is, more than 50 million dogs across the country. On the other side of the Atlantic, in England, another survey also shows that 12% of dogs have obesity.

Now, in Europe, various entities are trying to encourage European countries to join the month dedicated to walking dogs with the aim of improving their physical condition.

SHOPPING, BODY AND MIND IMPROVEMENT

These walks can be an opportunity for dogs to learn new tricks besides burning fat and energy. Likewise, physical activity is an exercise that endorphins are released creating a happy stateFor this reason, dogs – who, because of the low temperatures during winter, can spend more time at home – will improve their mood.

The first thing to keep in mind if you want to start continuous walks with your pet is to know their health. The American Veterinary Medical Association proposes: a visit to the vet before starting training so the professional can evaluate the physical tone where he is.

Regarding walking intensity and duration, “it’s recommended to start with short walks and rest as often as needed. As you gain confidence and frequency, you can gradually increase to one or more 15-minute brisk walking periods.” .

Finally, if your pet seems to want to go home during your walk, it may be a good idea to try taking him to a nearby park or more familiar area. Likewise, for a dog it is good exercise let him smell the surroundings.
