Apple: a small app maker sees turnover grow sharply

This is according to an independent study by the Analysis Group, commissioned by Apple. Analysts monitor a group of small app developers and their apps for two years. According to Apple, “small” applies if an app generates less than $1 million per year, or is downloaded less than 1 million times per year. More than 90 percent of app developers on the App Store are small developers.

Worldwide, turnover for such small developers grew by an average of 71 percent. This concerns developers who were active on the App Store in 2020, and are still active in 2022. In Europe, the turnover of small app creators grew by an average of 64 percent over two years.

Popular health and fitness app

The small French app maker saw their turnover grow the fastest in the last two years: by 122 percent. In Europe, the UK also stands out with 58 percent growth, and Germany with 37 percent growth.

Specifically, doubling can be seen in the health and fitness, sports, and lifestyle app categories. Measured in percentage terms, the turnover of small developers is still growing faster than that of large developers. According to Apple, the numbers show that small developers in the App Store have enough resilience to not only survive, but even thrive.

2.3 million jobs

Since launching the App Store in 2008, Apple has donated nearly $320 billion to app makers both small and large.

There are now 100,000 active app creators in Europe and, according to Apple, the App Store provides 2.3 million jobs in a broad sense.
