Waddinxveen – With over 250 registrations, the past is relived at the TV Waddinxveen open tournament, which will be held this week. “We keep him comfortable all year round and people appreciate that.”
Better tennis weather could hardly have been imagined when the first players took to the court for their matches on Saturday. Lots of sun, little wind. Last weekend the tournament on TV Waddinxveen went fast. “We have eighteen or nineteen parties on Saturday,” said Claudia Esveldt, a spokeswoman for the club. “And about twenty on Sundays.”
It’s been a while since the Waddinxveen Open was so busy during the opening weekend. “We are proud of the number of participants,” said Esveldt, pointing to the more than 250 registrants. The increase was striking because the number of participants decreased in other open tournaments. “That’s why we count our blessings. In previous years we had about 170, 175 applicants.”
According to the tournament committee, the reason for the increase in popularity is partly due to the structure of the tournament. If possible choose to play in groups and not according to the elimination system. “The advantage is that people are guaranteed at least two or three matches, where else you can finish after one round. As a result, you grow more bonds with your players, which in turn creates more fun,” says Esveldt.
The second reason why Waddinxveen has made a comeback, according to Esveldt, is because of the other tournaments the club holds throughout the year. Among other things, he points to après ski tournaments. “People appreciate it when a club puts a lot of energy into an event. We always try to make it fun. If they like it here, they will come back. We are now definitely reaping the benefits of that.
An open tournament like Waddinxveen can’t do without a theme. This year is Great Britain. “Tennis is a party, but it’s also about decoration. Of course our menu has been adjusted: he said fish and chips on the map.”
