MADRID – According to the latest data from eurostats Spain is the third largest pumpkin farm in the European Union. Pumpkins or “calabazas” are used not only for eating but also for making spooky lanterns on Halloween. In 2021, around 31,000 hectares in the European Union (EU) are devoted to pumpkin cultivation. The EU country that grew the most “calabasas” in 2021 was Poland with 289,600 tonnes, followed by France with 221,980 tonnes and Spain with 151,620 tonnes.
A few years ago (2018 to be precise), Spain was still the EU country where most of the pumpkins in the EU came from, but Poland and France have now become bigger producers. eurostats released this data on Halloween. Portugal ranks fourth in the European Union with 126,590 tonnes, followed by Germany with 99,080 tonnes and Austria with 20,680 tonnes. The Netherlands still produced 19,010 tonnes of pumpkins in 2021, which is seventh on the EU list of countries, while Belgium is eleventh with 13,800 tonnes.
Spain exports the majority of its domestically produced pumpkins, including to the Netherlands with nearly 56,500 tonnes and Belgium and Luxembourg with nearly 16,000 tonnes. Spanish pumpkins are the most exported to countries outside the European Union, followed by France with 97,000 tons, Britain with 87,000 tons and also Germany with 53,000 tons.
