January 2022 was the start of the year with fewer involuntary homicides so far in Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s six-year tenure. In that month, 2,427 homicides were recorded across the country, down 14.36% compared to January 2021, according to figures from Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System (SSNSP).
However, this downward trend is not evenly distributed across 32 Indonesian entities. Ten of these experienced improvements to varying degrees: Aguascalientes, Campeche, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Puebla, Quintana Roo and Sonora.
From this group, cases mexico state, where the greatest increase in intentional homicide occurred, measured in absolute terms. In January 2022, the entity had 214 homicides, 44 more than in January 2021: 170. On a percentage basis, the increase was 25.88%.
Second is michoacan, where in January 2022, 234 intentional homicides were recorded. This figure represents 30 more homicides than the state registered in January 2021, when SESNSP reported 204.

In the third, fourth and fifth positions are Sonora, Nuevo Leon and Hidalgo. From January 2021 to January 2022, Sonora saw an increase of 16 homicides, which last month increased by 159; Nuevo León had an increase of 11, making it 90, and Hidalgo increased by nine, closing last month with 30 kills.
To complete the list, Morelos recorded five intentional homicides in January 2022 compared to January 2021. Quintana Roo had four more than the previous year, whereas Aguascalientes and Campeche they have three more and in puebla the increase was from one case.
5 entities with the most murders in January
The latest SESNSP update — published last Monday — also shows that the five states with the most intentional homicides during the first month of 2022 are Baja California, Guanajuato, the States of Mexico, Michoacán, and Sonora.
Together, these five entities total 1,711 murders, which is equivalent to 44.12% of the monthly total.
The first entity in the rankings is Guanajuato, with 246, followed by Michoacán, with 234; Baja California, with 218; The State of Mexico, with 214, and Sonora, with 159.
In contrast, the five states with the fewest crimes of this type were Baja California Sur and Yucatán, with four each; Tlaxcala, with five; Aguascalientes, with six, and Campeche, with eight.
