Flooding from Storm Babet could continue for days in England, which was hit by rain and wind last weekend. The UK Environment Agency warns against this.
In some parts of England, Babet brought 200 millimeters of rain. As a result, 116 flood warnings remained in force across England on Monday. Further flooding is possible in parts of England through Wednesday due to heavy rain, the agency said. Therefore, it is estimated that the party will have to issue more warnings.
One of the worst affected areas is the east of Scotland. For example, residents of more than three hundred homes in the Scottish town of Brechin had to be evacuated because the South Esk River overflowed its banks on Friday and rose almost four meters above its usual level. Babet disrupted road and rail traffic across much of central and northern England.
At least five people have died since Thursday in the storm, which was named Babet by British meteorological agency Metoffice. Apart from Great Britain, Babet also hit northern Germany and southern Scandinavia with strong winds, heavy rain and high waves.
