Lloyds Bank has launched an app that allows users to prove their identity from their mobile phone, without requiring any documents. The introduction of Lloyds Bank Smart ID follows a £10m capital injection into digital ID specialist Yoti earlier this year.
The app allows users to share specific information via their phones with companies that request it, including name, date of birth, or proof of age over 18. The app will be part of the Digital ID Connect network, which connects the Lloyds Bank app with other apps in the Yoti digital ecosystem.
In the UK, fintech applications are already being accepted, for example to collect packages at the post office or as proof of age in cinemas or shops. Last year they were also certified by the UK government as proof of identity for work permits and rentals as well as checking whether someone has a criminal record or not.
“With our Smart ID app, UK consumers have more access to secure and digital ways to prove their identity,” explains James Fulker (Chief Digital Officer at Lloyds Banking Group). “This also marks a milestone following our investment in Yoti and we look forward to further development of the proposition we are working on together.”
