Ed Sheeran and Elton John have a great chance, but perhaps with a different song than Merry Christmas.
Being number one at Christmas is a household name in the UK. They even have a special term for it: Christmas Number 1. Many artists go the extra mile at the end of the year to reach number one in the UK charts during Christmas week. This year is no different.
Currently standing Ed Sheeran And Elton John still at number 1 with their Christmas duet Merry Christmasbut they’re competing against themselves this week. They’ve recorded a new version of their song with LadBaby called Sausage Rolls For Everyone.
LadBaby is a complete unknown to us, but the British YouTuber has managed to reach Christmas Number One for the past three years with his adaptations of 80s hits with new lyrics about sausage rolls. If LadBaby takes Christmas Number One again this year, he will break a record. No artist in UK chart history has topped the charts four times in the week of Christmas. LadBaby currently shares the record with the Beatles and it Spice Girl. Not even a little bit.
While there are certainly more contenders for Christmas Number 1 2021, Ed & Elton and LadBaby appear to be the better contenders for each other. They solved the problem easily by joining forces. The company created a sausage roll version of the current number 1 hit, Merry Christmas. Ed & Elton now have two chances to reach number 1 next week and LadBaby certainly benefit from the duo’s occasional popularity.
Sausage Rolls For Everyone is released this Friday and in the video clip we see the whole company in Christmas sweaters sausage rolls working in the studio. All proceeds from this Christmas single are donated to charity: the UK food bank.
On Friday 24th December we will find out who will win the 70th Christmas Number 1. Other contenders besides Merry Christmas and Sausage Rolls For Everyone are the classics All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey And Last Christmas by Hit! and of course all the other new singles coming out this week.
