Vengaboys have volunteered in British newspaper Metro to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Let’s go Come on see you on the Eurovision stage in 2022? If it were up to Vengaboy sailor Robin Pors, yes. In conversation with Metro about 0 points James Newman at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest he said: “I’m so embarrassed because England are so good. The songs are good, the singers are good, but they’re like, ‘OK, zero points’. How is that possible? Next year we’ll do it. We love England.”

There have been several occasions where Dutch artists have represented other countries at the Eurovision Song Contest. Last year, Stefania Liberakakis from Utrecht participated on behalf of Greece. The first Dutch player to represent another country was David Alexandre Winter. However, she failed to score a single point for Luxembourg in 1970. Another example is Stella Maessen of Heart of Soul, which took fourth place in 1982 to Belgian and Medisch Centrum West actress Annemieke Verdoorn. In 1985 she appeared on stage under the name Margo as part of an international company on behalf of Luxembourg, without much success.

It remains to be seen whether the England selection committee will accept Vengaboys’ offer. This country has only sent foreign artists three times. Olivia Newton-John (1974) and Gina G (1996) both grew up in Australia, while Katrina Leskanich of Katrina and the Waves comes from the United States. They all gave England top 10 rankings and Katrina and The Waves even claimed England’s last win in 1997. Given the mediocre results of the last ten years, it might not be a bad idea to look beyond the country’s borders.

What song should the Vengaboy family bring to Italy? At least not with their new single. Their song 1999 (I Wanna Go Back) was published after 1 September 2021 (a condition for participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022), but is a cover. Original version by Charli XCX & Troye Sivan was at Tipparade for seven weeks in autumn 2018. Check out Vengaboys’ performance below.
