UN urges end to current climate policy, ‘death sentence to world’

New report from world Meteorological Organization, published on the eve of World Earth Day was, to say the least, alarming.

The global average temperature in 2022 is 1.15 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. More than half of the ocean is experiencing at least one marine heatwave and glaciers are experiencing record shrinkage.

UN Secretary General,Antonio Guterres, He also issued another warning: “Current policies will make our world 2.8 degrees warmer by the end of the century. And it is a death sentence.”

“We need global acceleration through cooperation,” Guterres continued your statement. “And that means addressing disagreements, differences and tensions. Geopolitical divisions must not undermine the global fight against climate change by 1.5 degrees.”

Renewable energy, essential for change

Guterres also called on developed countries to meet promised “zero emissions” targets for 2040, 2050 for developing countries.

This will be the only way, says the UN, to stop the decline in human health and livelihoods, and to protect the planet, affected in 2022 by several heatwaves, as countries such as Germany, France, Portugal and the United Kingdom can confirm. Last year, actually, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe.

According to the European Union’s Earth Observation programme, CopernicusApril is over a quarter of continental Europe is suffering from drought. The World Meteorological Organization insists that the transition to renewable energy is urgent for the planet, and recalls how several extreme weather events for 2022 “coincided in quick succession”, leaving little time for recovery.
