UK Treasury and Health Secretary resigns over disagreements with Boris Johnson | Europe | DW

UK finance minister, Rishi Sunak; and Health, Sajid Javid, this Tuesday announced their resignation after losing confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The departures of two key executives weakened Johnson’s position, which was beset by scandals. Even if there were more ways out, the government could fall.

“People should expect the government to be carried out well, competently and seriously,” which is currently not the case, said Sunak in his resignation letter.

He also said he was “loyal” and publicly supported the Conservative leader, even when he disagreed with him “personally”. However, Johnson is unwilling to make “hard decisions” about the economy and that sets them apart in their approach.

Meanwhile, Javid pointed out that he cannot “carefully continue to serve in this government.”

“I’m on the team by instinct, but Britons have every right to expect integrity in government,” he said.

The former Health Secretary also argued that the Conservative Party’s problems “wouldn’t be solved under” Johnson, so he “lost faith in him.”
