Britain’s central government said on Thursday that local authorities should halt a trial of a four-day working week for their employees. This will result in reduced work carried out by local governments, thereby harming the tax paying community.
Some local governments are experimenting with 20 percent shorter working hours, while employees keep their old salaries.
They imitated various companies that previously implemented shorter work weeks. According to these companies, shorter work weeks provide a better work-life balance without reducing productivity.
Earlier this year, a survey of thousands of people in the UK found that a four-day working week was far more productive for most employees than a five-day working week.
“We got a lot of happy people, people really enjoyed it,” said Professor Brendan Burchell of Cambridge University at the time. “They really think that having a three-day weekend instead of two is a gift.”
However, the British government has a different opinion. “The government has made it clear that it does not support the introduction of a four-day working week in the local government sector,” said Lee Rowley. He was about local government in government in London.
“Local governments considering implementing this policy should not do so. Those who have implemented this policy should immediately stop this practice.”
