American meat giant Tyson Foods is to close its meat business in Wrexham in Wales. Tyson Foods has only owned the site since June last year through its acquisition of BRF. Its only remaining European branch is now in Oosterwolde.
Tyson Foods has announced that 71 jobs will be lost in Wrexham, but told the trade press that the entire plant will close by the end of this month. The American meat company has also said it is not seeking a buyer for the Welsh branch. The former BRF Wrexham has been a meatworks plant since 1962.
Acquisitions in Europe and Thailand
Tyson Foods completed the acquisition of operations in Europe and Thailand from Brazil’s BRF SA in June 2019. The American party paid $340 million for the acquisition. It involved chicken processing companies in Oosterwolde, Wrexham and four in Thailand.
“We are now better positioned to serve our customers in Europe, the Middle East and Asia,” CEO Noel White said at the event. “The processing plants in the Netherlands and the UK are supported by in-house innovation capabilities for the development of further processed chicken products for retail and foodservice customers across Europe.”
