Ford remains popular
In the Netherlands, Belgium and France, Renault emerged as the most popular in 2017, while Germans chose Volkswagen en masse. Despite this, Ford remained popular in England.
Ford and England had been closely linked for decades. Due to the large number of factories and even development departments that the brand had on ‘The Island’ and the fact that the American/British/German brand’s products seemed to be well received, Ford still managed to dominate the sales rankings. The Ford Fiesta had been the most popular car in the North Sea for much of the 1990s and regained the title in 2009. Since then, it has topped the list and 2017 is certainly not a changed year. The most popular car of all time in the UK was also in the top position last year with 94,533 units – fewer than in 2016. The gap to number 2, the Volkswagen Golf, is a big gap because the German manufacturer ‘only’ sold 74,605 times.
Not only does Ford score highly with the Fiesta, it also scores with the Focus (3). Vauxhall, the Opel from the ‘other side’, has two models in the top 10, the Nissan making it into 4th place with the British-made Qashqai. Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz also occupies two places in the top 10. BMW’s rivals will have to be content with this, although the BMW brand’s hatchback, the Mini, is back on the list.
