The NOC*NSF Sports Gala will take place on Wednesday night. Cycling is well represented in various categories with Harrie Lavreysen (Sportsman of the Year), Annemiek van Vleuten (Sportswoman of the Year) and Jumbo-Visma (Sports Team of the Year). But Merijn Zeeman is missing from Coach of the Year and people on the team like that Cycling Flash Podcast no.

“Merijn Zeeman hasn’t been nominated yet and I think that’s a real shame!”, Youri doesn’t mind. “What he has done – and maybe it should be an oeuvre award, because it is a process of the last few years – is brilliant. He has built Jumbo-Visma from a WorldTour ugly duckling into a world-winning team. They are the best World Team for the last three years, all of 2022 and they have won the Tour de France. Merijn should always be one of the nominees, if you ask me.”

Rowing coach Eelco Meenhorst, short track coach Jeroen Otter and football coach Sarina Wiegman have now been nominated as Coach of the Year. Especially the last one doesn’t belong there, the men on Cycling Flash Podcast. “Women’s football is one booming business. For years. But it’s not as big as cycling among men. Everyone talks about emancipation and equal treatment, but go for it. European Championship women’s football – with all due respect – shouldn’t tie the shoelaces of the Tour de France.

The Coach of the Year section followed suit after 37.58 minutes.
