Today: Madcon hits number 1

For the second time in Top 40 history, a Norwegian artist took first place when Beggin’ was named top performer on June 20, 2009.

A-Ha gained attention in 1985 as an artist from Norway. Madcon followed in the trio’s footsteps and became the second group from Norway in 2009. With their only number 1 hit they managed to surpass A-Ha as Madcon lasted a week longer as the leader of the list.

Madcon is a collaboration between Tshawe Baqwa and Yosef Wolde-Mariam and was founded in 1992. They have been looking for the right formula for their success for a long time. In 2000 they released their debut single with the song God Forgive Me, but it was only in 2002 that they became known to the general public with the release of the song Barcelona. After the release of the album It’s All A Madcon (in 2004), they achieved definitive star status in their home country. The second album So Dark The Con Of Man was released on March 3 2007, with the song Beggin’ as the opening song.

Bob Gaudio had written Four Seasons songs for years, but decided to distance himself from them in 1965. But he picked up the pen again in 1967 for the album New Gold Hits. He wrote Beggin’ with Peggy Farina, which had a hit with The Angels in 1963 with My Boyfriend’s Back. In the United States the song managed to reach number 16. 30 years later, the song again attracted attention in France and England when French DJ Pilooski performed the song. Madcon was working on their version at the time with different lyrics and rhymes to the rap. The song became a huge success in 2007; The song became the best-selling single of the year, going six times platinum and taking first place on the Norwegian charts.

Beggin’ did not score enough in our country in the spring of 2008, but in France the song remained in the top 100 for 47 weeks, including 7 weeks at number 1. Second and also after Beggin’ was lifted to the Alarm disc in April 2009 .it still works. Beggin’ finished in fourth place in the annual review, led by I Gotta Feeling (by The Black Eyed Peas). At the end of 2012, Beggin’ returned to the top of the hit list after Sandra van Nieuwland sang the song on The Voice Of Holland. Beggin’ then came in fourth and also ensured that she became the first Dutch singer with three top 10 songs simultaneously.

After its success, Madcon released several more singles and managed to enter Tipparade three times. In 2015 they spent 25 weeks in the Top 40 with Don’t Worry, a collaboration with Ray Dalton, including two weeks at number 3.

This day includes the birthdays of Sage The Gemini (1992) and Serayah (1995).
