Dua Lipa, 26, was recently appointed ambassador to Kosovo, her parents’ homeland. Vjosa Osmani, the country’s president who is recognized by about half of all countries, praised the singer for his position as a role model for many girls and women in the world. “Besides your musical talent, you have done a lot for the people of Kosovo. The way you draw attention to our country is incomparable and invaluable,” the president added.

On Instagram, Dua Lipa shared a photo with the president and a printout of a letter in which the president praised and thanked the singer. “It is an honor and privilege to represent my country in this way around the world and to see that we can make a difference,” he wrote. His parents are Albanian and fled from Kosovo in the 1990s.
For a long time Kosovo was part of Yugoslavia and then Serbia, but in 2008 Kosovo itself declared independence. Countries such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, and England have recognized this independence, but not all countries have recognized it. One consequence is that the people of Kosovo are the only Europeans who cannot travel freely, not even in Europe. Tensions still exist in the country. For example, quarrels with neighboring Serbia have flared up again recently. “The youth of Kosovo deserve to be able to travel freely, get visas and dream big,” Lipa concluded.
