In 2017, Amanda Koci’s (stage name Ava Max) music career began when she participated in Clap Your Hands, a single from American DJ and producer Le Youth. Her first singles followed in 2018 with My Way, Not Your Barbie Girl and Slippin, after which Sweet But Psycho became her big breakthrough.
Following in all Scandinavian countries, the song also hit number 1 in England and Germany before being able to take first place in our country. Ava Max herself felt that success awaited her: “It all happened in one month. It’s starting to happen and it’s crazy because I never thought it would happen this quickly. We knew the song was special but not this one,’ he told Idolator in 2018. Sweet But Psycho seems to appeal to a lot of people. This song is about a girl who is not understood in a relationship and is told that she is crazy and crazy. “But in the end she lets her feelings speak and she is an outspoken girl. And that’s how I am in the real world.”
The song was produced by Canadian Henry Russell Walter, known in the music world as Cirkut. He has worked as a writer and producer with Britney Spears, The Weeknd, Shakira and Rihanna, among others, and has contributed to Dutch number 1 hits three times previously with Timber (by Pitbull and Ke$ha in 2013), Dark Horse (by Katy Perry and Juicy J in 2014) and Starboy (by The Weeknd and Daft Punk in 2016). Ava, on the other hand, has worked with the producer for about three years and has learned a lot from him: “He has helped a lot in making my productions sound real. It’s very much in the foreground and in your face, where before it was more in the background.” Max wasn’t used to it because in previous years he had gone into the studio to sing demos for the writers and producers who then started the recording. After he put his first song on SoundCloud with Cirkut, he was offered a record deal via email. He would love to make another song with Bruno Mars because of the quality and energy with which his songs are expressed. Bazzi and Cardi B are also on her wish list.
Meanwhile, Ava has learned to remain patient. “When I make a song in the studio, I immediately want to share it with everyone. I have learned that it takes time.” He also needed that time to take first place because Sweet But Psycho ‘waited’ in second place for six weeks.
