Groups like Take That, East 17 and previously New Kids On The Block have demonstrated boy band success on the charts, and Bob and Chris Herbert knew it from the start.
In 1994 they decided to focus on forming an international caliber female partner and ran an ad in trade magazine The Stage: “Wanted: Are you 18-23 years old and can you sing and dance? Are you friendly, ambitious and committed? We formed a girl pop group for a record deal and organized auditions on March 4th. Bring your sheet music or cassette,” it reads. About 400 girls auditioned and had to dance to Stay (by Eternal) before they were allowed to play their own song. Twelve candidates were eventually selected during the first shift. In the next round, Geri Halliwell was also allowed to play. participated, which had missed the first audition. Eventually Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Michelle Stephenson and Geri Halliwell were put together in the group Touch. Stephenson was soon replaced by Emma Bunton. Meanwhile, Halliwell suggested using the name Spice. The initiative with Bob and Chris did not It worked and in the spring of 1995 the girls decided to leave. Almost immediately they knocked on Eliot Kennedy’s door and he took them to Simon Fuller who immediately gave the girls a contract. The Spice name was later changed to Spice Girls if it turned out that a rapper was already active. under the name Spice.
The group’s first song with writers and producers Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard was Feed Your Love. The song eventually died from the tempo. Then everyone came up with a different piece for a new and faster rhythm. “They didn’t think in terms of verse and chorus or what really was ‘standard’,” recalls Rowe. “We swept all the pieces into piles. It’s like how remixes have always been done before, a bit of cutting and sticking.” Wannabe was finally put together within half an hour before being released on July 7, 1996 as the Spice Girls debut single. The single is accompanied by a special clip, shot at London’s Midland Grand Hotel, which is rendered into the final result without interruptions or cut points.
The Spice Girls scored a total of ten Top 40 hits between 1996 and 2000, with Mama/Who Do You Think You Are in 1997 being their biggest success in the Netherlands. In 2000 it was announced that the group was taking a break to make room for solo activities. They have since returned several times in 2019, without Victoria Beckham, with 13 shows in Ireland and the UK.
