The Whispers were formed in 1964 and the original lineup consisted of twin brothers Wallace and Walter Scott, Gordy Harmon, Marcus Hutson and Nicholas Caldwell. This group from Los Angeles scored several soul hits in the 1960s, said Desiree. “But in the late 1970s – as the disco era was coming to an end – I switched to Solar Records, a record label specializing in disco, funk and R&B.”
Leon Sylvers
At Solar they hooked up with Leon Sylvers. “You could say he is a versatile musician, because he wrote the song And The Beat Goes On for them.” The singer-songwriter takes care of all the instruments, including the drums. “And without a drum machine at the time, he had to rely on his drum kit where he played every element manually.”
“If the rhythm isn’t right, you just have to repeat it again, for the full 6 minutes,” says Desiree. With The Whispers, Sylvers spent long days in the studio perfecting his songs. And all the men are confident in the final result: it will be a success. And it will happen. And The Beat Goes On reached the top 10 in the US, UK and of course the Netherlands.
