Why focus on digital security?
Every week automatic updates appear on our smartphones about how much time we spent on our phones that week. The clock probably doesn’t lie. Not to mention as we become increasingly digitally active in our everyday lives. It’s often not immediately obvious, but many devices — both at home and at work — are connected to the internet. Bring our smartphones to televisions, and WiFi doorbells to smart energy meters. Indeed, where would we be today without it IInternet for everything is?
Great development, but there is a downside to digitization; cyber crime. Today, almost 70% of all Dutch people have to deal with one or more forms cyber crime; phishing emails, scams via WhatsApp or text messages from unreal banks. And what types of threats should companies consider? Ddos attacks – where an organization comes to a standstill – and ransomware – where a person’s data is no longer accessible – are the most popular among criminals.
As a collective, we have become highly dependent on these digital devices, and this is what makes us more vulnerable than ever. Cybercriminals lurk, smell big money and their way of working is becoming more complex and aggressive day by day. What can you do as a company and as a citizen to arm yourself against this? How do we make our technology safer? And what if a criminal hacker steps in?
Better to be safe than sorry
International digital security company ESET – the biggest players in the European Union – come to the rescue with their security software solutions. Dave Maasland, CEO of ESET Netherlands, and his company are committed to a (more) digitally secure Netherlands. They secure everything digitally. “What we found really important in this regard is that we don’t think of digital security as an end in itself.” I believe technology will solve important challenges of our time; climate, poverty, health. If the technology is not secure, then we will not be able to solve the problem. That’s why we at ESET are focused on this. Our proposition is Progress. Protected.’ Technology ensures progress, one has only to protect that technology. That’s exactly what we do.’
Why does Maasland think it is important that more attention be paid to the subject of ‘digital security’? Maasland raised the example of a car with brakes. “Why are there brakes in a car? Not so the car can’t go fast, but so it can go faster. If a car doesn’t have brakes and you’re going 120 km/h, you can’t slow down and you won’t go fast either.” to make sure you can drive fast. That way I think we can go to cyber security allowed to watch. Digital safety is a prerequisite, so you can do business in the digital age, brake when necessary, and take risks.”
