The teacher shortage is increasing. New teachers often leave school earlier than students

Salary alone will not get us there

If you want your Noah and Julia to get a proper education in the future, we need to do something about the situation of the dolls in front of the class. Currently: not ideal. Anyone who still thinks we can get everything done with a touch of extra pay hasn’t got it. Even if such financial increases result in more PABO students and freshmen, it will make no difference in the long run if working conditions do not improve. A quarter young teachers walk out of the classroom screaming again in five years time due to the high workload and lack of guidance and of course that will never make up for the teacher shortage. Another example of how not to do it: a secondary school in Zoetermeer ignored all criticism and pushed ahead with plans for a new school with lessons of just half an hour for a new generation of students with a TikTok attention span of about three seconds in a bid to get as many Euro subsidies from The Hague as possible. The result: a quarter of teachers left last summer. Let’s take heed of these messages and listen to the teachers’ wishes for half an hour before the next education reform, reorganization or budget discussion. Maybe we’ll learn something.
