The strike halted British rail transport

Waterloo Station in London. Rail traffic in England was largely brought to a halt due to a strike by railroad workers. It is the country’s first regular working day after New Year’s and many people are unable to travel for work. The main train station in London is nearly extinct.

The 48 hour strike was organized by the RMT union. About 40,000 RMT members took part in the campaign. The Aslef train drivers’ union will also go on strike on Thursday. Railroad unions have been campaigning for some time to enforce substantial wage increases and better working conditions. The work was also stopped several times before Christmas.

The British government asked the unions to return to the negotiating table. According to the government, the action damaged the railroad tracks and caused inconvenience to passengers.

Sunak disappointed
