Something special is happening in Great Britain. And if you only follow the Dutch media, you will almost miss it. The working class in Britain say ‘enough is enough’. After years of austerity and broken promises, they went on strike. Because if people don’t listen, then action is needed.
After years of reduced health care (which is free for everyone), the queues are huge. Patients have to wait too long for ambulances and then wait hours before their turn in the emergency department. The ambulance personnel now started apologizing for being late. But other sectors are also crashing. Public transport, trains, schools, the Amazon and more. Real action wave. Security have set up a strike calendar for that.
And the reaction of the Conservative government? Change the laws to make raids more difficult. Unfortunately, we read less about this in the Dutch media. Of course we read that the prime minister is not wearing a seat belt in a video and is blocking transgender laws. Coincidentally, I attended a demonstration in London last week about this shameful blockade. In this militant action for equal treatment of trans people, hopes are not pinned on politics, but politicians are snubbed: ‘Keith Starmer eats shit’.
Instead, the activists expected a trade union movement. You are called to join the union. To unite and organize.
Sometimes you don’t read about it in the paper, but something wonderful happens. The trade union renaissance in Britain has only just begun, and is much to be desired. If the political party offers no solutions and only opposes you, organize yourself. Get in action with your colleagues, friends and strangers. Enough already.
