At least 21 children have died in the UK from strep A infectionsafter the Scottish Public Health Agency released this Wednesday two deaths in Scotland among children under the age of ten.
According to the report, Between 3 October and 25 December, seven deaths were recorded in Scotland due to group A streptococcal bacterial infection.Two of them are children under the age of 10.
A total of 21 children have died in the UK from diseases caused by strep A, whose symptoms include skin infection -impetigo-, scarlet fever and sore throat.
Although most of these infections are relatively mild and can be cured with antibiotics, on rare occasions the bacteria cause life-threatening illness.
There are already several European countries – including Spain, France, Ireland and the UK – which have detected an increase in cases of the disease among children under the age of ten in recent months, including several deaths.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the risk of European residents developing an invasive disease caused by streptococcus A is “low”, although governments should be aware of a hypothetical increase in cases in children.
