It’s a voice nearly everyone recognizes: the dark, warm voice of nature filmmaker David Attenborough. He is 96 years old but still full of fire about nature. His latest series is set in his native United Kingdom. ‘Wild Islands‘ provides a fantastic view of nature on the various British islands: from puffins to otters and from robins to killer whales.

But even before the series started, there was a furor in Great Britain. According to British newspaper ‘The Guardian’, the BBC has decided not to broadcast the final and sixth episode of ‘Wild Isles’ on TV for fear of right-wing criticism. The BBC replied that from the start the intention was to simply publish the episode via the internet.
The sixth episode will be politically sensitive and, in addition to the natural beauty of Great Britain, will also confront climate change, deforestation and a sharp decline in biodiversity in our own country. The series is also partially funded by a number of nature conservation organizations. And it doesn’t suit everyone.

According to Tim de Wit, former NOS correspondent in the UK, this is the first time climate skeptics have made themselves heard in this way. “David Attenborough was embraced left and right. Because of him all Britons have a tremendous awareness of nature. They heard about the plastic soup in the oceans from him. He has put that awareness on the map. An icon in the fight for nature protection.
And like the BBC which is completely independent, it is not associated with Greenpeace or any other interest group. I think because he is English he has a greater sense of nature than we have here in Holland. But now for the first time you’re hearing comments from the far right, they’re skeptical now. Politician Nigel Farage in particular has commented on and questioned the David Attenborough stories.”
